New Chapel Offers Alternative to Courthouse Wedding

By Judie Holcomb-Pack

Just a short walk from the Government Center’s magistrate’s office in downtown Winston-Salem, a wedding chapel has opened that offers “a courthouse wedding with a twist.”

When Angela Johnson attended the marriage of her niece at the courthouse, she just couldn’t get the scene out of her mind. “I had  never been to a courthouse wedding before and I was so disappointed,” Angela remembers. “There was a glass partition between the couple and our family. There were strangers watching who were waiting to be called for hearings.”

Her niece had forgotten the license and had to run back home to get it. The magistrate told her that if they were closed when she returned, the couple could go across the street to the jail as a magistrate is available there 24 hours a day.”

Angela couldn’t imagine someone getting married at the jail. “I just kept thinking to myself, ‘There’s got to be a better way.’”

That experience sparked the idea for Happily Ever After Wedding Chapel. Angela said, “I feel that all brides and grooms should have a wedding experience, even if it’s small.” Many people can’t afford a big wedding, so this is an economical alternative that is convenient, intimate, and beautiful.

Angela is ordained and performs all types of wedding ceremonies. She provides music and a photographer is available to take pictures during the ceremony and after. There is intimate seating for seven attendees and a small table outside the venue for a wine, fruit and cheese reception. Whatever the faith tradition, Angela will work with couples to make it special.

Angela says, “This is where my heart is. It gives me as much joy as the couples I marry. I believe in one love, God’s love. I want to help people that love one another to make that next step.”

Renewal of vows is also available at Happily Ever After. Whether it’s a big anniversary like the 10th or 25th, or just a special time for a couple when they would like to restate their vows, this venue is the perfect intimate setting. Weddings can be performed on any holiday, such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas or New Year’s Eve.

Happily Ever After is located at 111 N. Chestnut Street in the Victoria Building on the second floor. Weddings cost $125 and can be arranged by appointment from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. For more information, visit
