Mom Murphy’s Treasured Recipes

Mike Simpson of Empower Publishing was approached in the summer of 2016 by Francis Krites Murphy about getting her collection of recipes made into a book. She has not been in the best of health and, not feeling able to shop, wanted to give the recipe book to her family as a Christmas gift.

Mike assumed it would be about 200 or so recipes, but when he received her collection, it was 600 handwritten recipes! The collection was put into book form (all handwritten recipes) and finished just before Christmas 2016. Francis’ son Barron, a TV producer at a Charlotte station, mentioned his mother’s book to his colleagues who decided to do a story about Frances. Then the Winston-Salem Journal picked up the story. Francis never intended to sell the book, but after making it available on Amazon, she’s sold 1,150 copies so far!

Here are a couple of recipes from Mom Murphy’s Treasured Recipes.

Angel Flake Biscuits

5 cups self-rising flour

1 cup shortening

1/4 cup sugar

1 envelope dry yeast

2 tablespoons warm water

2 cups buttermilk

Stir flour and measure. Blend shortening into flour. Add 2 tablespoons warm water into a bowl with yeast and stir slightly. Add yeast mix into flour mix and then the remaining ingredients. Stir slightly until blended. Place dough on lightly floured surface and roll out to 1/2 to 2/3 inch thinkness. Cut out with 2-inch biscuit cutter. Bake at 425 degrees until lightly browned.
Makes about 40 biscuits.

Mom Krites Fudge

2 cups white sugar

2 cups brown sugar

1 cup milk

4 tablespoons cocoa

4 tablespoons Karo syrup

1/4 lb. butter

vanilla flavoring

Mix everything together and bring to a boil. Let mixture boil until it comes to a soft-ball stage. Remove from heat and beat. Pour into a buttered pan. Let set and then cut.
