Volunteers Keep Cricket’s Nest Going Strong for 40+ Years
Where do you shop when you’re looking for a beautiful, handmade wedding gift, or an heirloom-quality baby gift? How about reasonably priced, hand-thrown pottery, or adorable doll clothes, and trendy accessories? For these and other wonderful gifts and home décor, the Cricket’s Nest Craft Shop is a unique shopping experience located in the heart of Forsyth County.
The Cricket’s Nest, operated by the City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department, is a non-profit business that consigns merchandise handcrafted by Forsyth County Senior Adults age 55 and over.
Cricket’s Nest is supported by many wonderful volunteers. One such volunteer is Bet Wilson, a passionate advocate for the Cricket’s Nest, and the President of the Cricket’s Nest Board of Directors. A retired school teacher, Bet worked for the public school system for over 40 years and is an active member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. She is the President of Friends of Reynolda Library Board of Directors and the Secretary of the Piedmont Photography Club. Bet enjoys bridge, travel, reading, creative writing, photography and spending time with her two married daughters and three grandchildren. This busy lady still finds time to volunteer one day each month at the Cricket’s Nest, conducts quarterly board meetings, and works with many special events held at South Fork Park throughout the year.
Another valued volunteer, Trish Anthony has a Masters in Clinical Social Work and is retired with 27 years as a social worker. She is an active member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church, a Master Gardener, and enjoys music and reading. When not busy with church activities, Trish enjoys caring for her 96-year-old mother, and spending time with her family, including her dog, Inky. Trish volunteers on a monthly basis and is always willing to help out during special events. As a former Cricket’s Nest staff person, she is fully trained and steps in to help out whenever needed.
The Cricket’s Nest is fortunate to have these and many other wonderful volunteers, too numerous to list. Our volunteers donate not only their time, but also bring their many talents and experience to help keep this unique business operating for 40+ years!
