Newcomers and Neighbors Getting to Know Each Other While Exploring W-S
By Jean Issac and Elizabeth Balser, a recent president
Anyone moving into greater Winston-Salem may wonder how to make friends and get involved in local social, service, and community activities.
We recommend Newcomers and Neighbors of Greater Winston-Salem! “N&N” is an organization provides social activities, learning experiences, and community service for both new and established women residents of the greater Winston Salem area. Its purpose is to promote friendship among newcomers and neighbors and aid in their adjustment to the community. We encourage members to take an active interest in the civic and social welfare of the community and to promote charitable and humanitarian projects in the area, using their time, energy, and financial support.
Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesdays of the month. Programs include speakers from civic, cultural, health, and charitable organizations in the area. Occasionally, a musical or dance group will perform for us.
Our Newcomers and Neighbors club also schedules a variety of social events each month so that the women can really get to know each other. These include day and evening cards, bridge, mah-jong, day trips, ladies’ lunch, book club, and the occasional craft activity. At our evening activities such as socials, dinner out, wine-tasting, and travel presentations, we encourage members to bring spouses and/or other guests. Our members also engage in four community service projects during the year, which provide assistance to local agencies. Members choose the activities in which they want to participate.
The N&N board holds monthly meetings with an optional lunch together afterwards. Coordinators of the interest groups serve on the board, along with the president, vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, and newsletter editor. Chairs of committees such as publicity, refreshments, sunshine, and town crier also serve. With all of these women working together, they organize exciting, cohesive activities for all members!
Our name, Newcomers and Neighbors, means that we welcome those who’ve just moved here (newcomers), as well as those who have lived in town for years (neighbors). More veteran residents help new ones learn about our area. Presently there are 66 members and it is quite a diversified group. A large percentage of our membership is retired. These are women who have the free time to get acquainted with the area. Others are employed and enjoy the events that fit their schedules. Members have come from all over – from 23 states and two foreign countries – and from all walks of life – teachers, bankers, medical professionals, administrators, business women and homemakers, among others.
What we all have in common is that we love the Winston-Salem area. We want to know more about it and provide service to its residents, and to work and play together to make our lives here enjoyable and productive.
If you want to know more about this vibrant women’s organization, check out our website at http://wsnewcomers.blogspot.com/. Our general meetings are held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street (just off Silas Creek Parkway, via the Bolton Street exit) at 10:00 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
