Worldwide, one in three women and one in eight men over age 50 are affected by osteoporosis, a common cause of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). Many VCFs go undiagnosed and untreated — often because people consider back pain a normal part of aging and don’t mention it to their doctors. But if you leave it untreated, you could be at risk for more injury and even death.

One day in March 2017, Cynthia Shipp was sitting at home when she decided to go out and get a library card. She chose the Southside Branch of the Forsyth County Public Library because she had grown up in the area and graduated from Parkland High School.
The room was buzzing with conversation. Volunteers with The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem had gathered for a late-summer ice cream social and a time to connect with each other. As Hurricane Florence headed for the Triad, stories about standing in line at the grocery store were overheard, along with expressions of concern for neighbors down east.
